Amethyst facts...
amethyst    Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz and was once considered more valuable than diamonds. It is found in Brazil, Uruguay, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Australia, Canada and United States. Amethyst can range in color from deep purple and light lilac to lavender or mauve, but the most valuable amethyst is a deep medium purple with rose-colored flashes.

Amethyst history and lore...
amethyst    Amethyst has been found in ancient Egyptian intaglios, medieval protective amulets, and in royal jewelry, scepters and crowns dating back as far as the ninth century. The word amethyst comes from the Greek word amethystos meaning "not drunken". In ancient Greece it was associated with the Dionysus, the god of wine. Amethyst was believed to be a powerful force in preventing intoxication, and wine was often served in amethyst goblets.

Amethyst healing properties...
amethyst    A powerful healing stone, amethyst is known for its calming, stabilizing effects. It has been used to help relieve pain, strengthen the immune system, and to ease insomnia and grief. Amethyst is thought to have a stabilizing effect on those struggling to overcome addictive behaviors. Many people believe that amethyst helps channel positive universal energy - and place amethyst under their pillow at night to bring on "sweet dreams".
