Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz and was once considered more valuable than diamonds. It is found in Brazil, Uruguay, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Australia, Canada and United States. Amethyst can range in color from deep purple and light lilac to lavender or mauve, but the most valuable amethyst is a deep medium purple with rose-colored flashes. | |

Amethyst has been found in ancient Egyptian intaglios, medieval protective amulets, and in royal jewelry, scepters and crowns dating back as far as the ninth century. The word amethyst comes from the Greek word amethystos meaning "not drunken". In ancient Greece it was associated with the Dionysus, the god of wine.
